UNFI’s acquisition of Supervalu closed in October 2018, and has been one of the biggest topics in our natural channel research since, as we see risk to the integration and execution for both companies. We also continue to monitor Amazon’s influence on Whole Foods since their acquisition in 2017.
Sprouts has carved out a good niche in food retail with its focus on healthy/fresh products at affordable prices and excelled at retail basics (operations and execution). We have some concern on competition from conventional supermarkets over time as these retailers increase fresh/healthy assortments and get more competitive on price, but Sprouts seems to be navigating increased competition fairly well recently.
